The explosion of manufacturing in China during the 1980s through the early years of the 21st Century resulted in the mass migration of young people from rural areas into the industrial zones of South Eastern China. Most of these people were born under strict Communist rule, and more recently became the first generation since Mao Ze Dong came to power to be introduced to capitalism.

In a shoe factory in Guang Zhou, couples live in dormitory-style rooms while they work to send money home to their families and try to save enough to eventually start their own small businesses. In most cases, the rural homes they left lacked even basic services and this move south will require a decade of hard work before they can return with any of the spoils of China’s new economic experiment.
